Flavor Symbols

Experimental Design on Braille Food Guide

The food packaging industry often overlooks inclusive design—particularly for the visually impaired, with limited use of braille. This project introduces a tactile symbol system using braille to provide clear, accessible information on packaging and beyond. At the heart of this work is a desire to balance functionality, aesthetics, and universal understanding. While challenges around feasibility and adoption remain, the ethical and social impact of the system outweighs these hurdles.

As part of this exploration, I developed a concept for a children’s book that introduces braille symbols through storytelling—bridging learning and accessibility at an early age. Alongside this, I created a series of tactile mockups, including symbol tags that can be attached to everyday items to signal key information through touch as well as a symbol guide in braille. These extensions bring the system to life and demonstrate its real-world applications, while honoring the core values of empathy, inclusion, and meaningful design.
